Children in NSCC’s Head Start program recently attended a reading of The Polar Express, by President Wayne Burton. Held in the Lynn Campus Library, President Burton’s participation was a part of the Lynn Reads program and Massachusetts Family Literacy Month. Our Head Starters were joined by a group from the Ford School, as well as by other members of the NSCC and Lynn communities. Each child in attendance received a free book, compliments of Centerboard, a community service group in Lynn.
Governor Patrick declared November as Massachusetts Family Literacy Month to highlight the important role that families play in their children’s literacy development. Lynn’s participation kicked off with an event in the Lynn Public Library on November 27, highlighting local storyteller, Tony Toledo, and offering hot cocoa and free books. Additional events will be held throughout the city during 2013, and will feature readers chosen from community leaders.
