This semester the Library will be continuing with its 30 Ways to Get Smarter Using Your Library This Academic Year Campaign.

Each week the Library will reveal a new tip in which by using our services and resources you can “get smarter”.

We are past the halfway point so we thought it would be a good time to recap our first 15 Ways.

#1: Listen to Classical Music. The structure of Classical Music through its melody and rhythm affects the brain's organization and its abilities. In fact, music enhances spatial IQ by increasing short and long term memory. Expose yourself to more Classical Music using Naxos Music Library.

#2: Get News from Around the World
Don’t shut yourself out from new ideas. Read the news from around the world from a different cultural perspective in LexisNexis.

#3 Visit a Museum
Reduce stress simply by visiting a museum. Viewing artifacts and art contributes to less stress in your life, allowing you to focus on the things that really matter.

The Lynn and Danvers Campus Libraries have passes to the Peabody Essex Museum, and the Lynn Campus Library has student passes to the Lynn Museum and Historical Society. Borrow a museum pass today!

#4 Read a Banned Book
Come into the Library and take out a banned or censored book!

#5 Read a Shakespeare Play
Reading the Bard has been shown to engage the brain more actively than most contemporary texts.

The library has many of Shakespeare’s works in books, DVDs, and online. Ask a librarian how to access them today!

#6 Write Research Reviews Online
Anyone can be a critic on the Internet - and you should too! Share your research experiences with your classmates by posting on the our Facebook page or commenting on one of our LibGuides.

#7 Become Your Own Health Advocate
The NSCC Library has some fantastic consumer health resources at your disposal, and many of them are available electronically.

A full listing of our consumer health resources online and in print, along with recommended, vetted websites are available on our Consumer Health LibGuide.

#8 Ask a Librarian
Ask a Librarian for research assistance. Drop in the Library for a research consultation, or make an appointment with a Librarian for help. You can also call, email or chat with us!

#9 Use a LibGuide
Know what we know! LibGuides are online research guides created by NSCC Librarians specifically for your course assignments.

#10 Experiment with New Recipes and Spices
Did you know? One member of the ginger family is a spice called Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) that is known as “The Spice of Life” throughout the majority of India and Southeast Asia.
Studies have shown Turmeric may improve memory or other areas of cognitive function.

Research the healing properties of turmeric and other spices in our Credo Reference and Ebrary databases.

#11 Learn about something just for fun
Reading for fun has been found to improve students' academic achievement. The Lynn and Danvers Campus Libraries' Display Collection features new popular fiction and nonfiction titles.

#12 Work Smarter, Not Harder on Your Citations - Use EasyBib
EasyBib is a citation generator that can create bibliographies in MLA, APA and Chicago styles. It also shows you how to do parenthetical (in-text) citations for your sources.

#13 Volunteer
Thoughts of Giving Fills the Brain With Feel-Good Chemicals.

Check out our books on Volunteerism at the Libraries to find out the other benefits of volunteering. Looking for local volunteer opportunities try www.idealist.org. Searching for international volunteer opportunities try www.volunteerinternational.org or www.unv.org.

#14 Exercise improves your mind and your body.
Exercise to get some stress relief. Consider trying a new workout to revitalize yourself!

The Library has ebooks like Belly Dancing for Fitness: the ultimate dance workout that unleashes your creative spirit or Shape Up with the Slow Fat Triathlete: 50 ways to kick butt on the field, in the pool, or at the gym, no matter what your size and shape. The Library also has collections of DVDs, streaming videos and print books on exercise and fitness.

#15 Become an Expert. Master one subject you really enjoy.
Use the Library's collections, online research databases, and interlibrary loan services to become knowledgeable about the one topic you truly love.

Follow our campaign online through our Facebook page or search for 30 Ways Signs in the Library to see related displays. Achieving a greater IQ may be easier and more fun than you think!
