A move to a new Library System this summer called Evergreen and a recent court ruling involving copyright and Georgia State University has produced a favorable outcome for the NSCC Library - the ability to begin offering a new service - E-Reserves.
Starting this semester faculty may request print articles or excerpts of books that support their course curriculum be scanned and uploaded digitally into their Angel courses. Materials requested for E-Reserve must either be owned by the Library or be a personal copy of the instructor, and not already be available electronically for a reasonable price.
There are many benefits to using E-reserves. Students may access the items when the Library is closed, E-Reserves assist in preservation of materials, and E-Reserves support the College’s paperless initiatives. E-reserves can also help to defer the cost of having to pay for photocopies (if students want to print out an E-reserve item, they can use on campus computers with their student printing account allotment).
Edie Sarenteas is a library staff member, and also an NSCC student, who is using E-Reserves in one of her courses. Edie says, "This is a wonderful tool that allows me to print portions of an ebook from anywhere at any time. E-Reserves has made my life as a student easier!"
You don’t have to be using Angel in your course already in order to use E-Reserves.
Detailed information about what can be placed on E-reserve and how to submit a request can be found here.
